US Coast Guard intercepted more than $43 million of cocaine

THE  US Coast Guard intercepted more than $43 million of cocaine in a speedboat in the Caribbean Sea.

Aerial surveillance from the Coast Guard Cutter Northland spotted a vessel with four people on board and bales on the deck on March 3.
They boarded the vessel and seized 54 bales of contraband which tested positive for cocaine.
The raid was part of Operation Martillo - part of the US government's drive to cut the trafficking of illicit drugs, weapons and cash from Central America.
Captain Brendan McPherson, the 7th Coast Guard District's chief of enforcement, said, "This successful seizure by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland is just the latest of several recent interdictions to occur under Operation Martillo."
Some 1600kg of cocaine - with a wholesale value of $43,254,000 - was recovered from the vessel and four suspected smugglers were detained.
The cutter Northland is a 270ft vessel stationed in Portsmouth, Virginia. It was assisted by the Coast Guard Cutter Pea Island, from Key West, Florida, and the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron stationed in Jacksonville, Florida.
