LAKEWOOD, N.J. – New Jersey police say a toddler who went missing while playing outside her home has been found dead in a nearby septic tank, MyFoxNY reports.
The 2-year-old girl had reportedly been playing outside with her siblings Monday when she fell down a hole into the septic tank. She was reported missing by her mother, Marina Matias, around 4:50 p.m.
The Lakewood Township Public Works Department drained the water from the tank in the search for the child.
"At approximately 7:30 PM, the water level had been dropped and police and emergency personnel unfortunately made visual observation of the body of a child in that tank," Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said.
Police have not released the name of the child.
